An outstanding series' NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

A Bill Slider Mystery

Detective Superintendent Dickson is to be replaced by DS Baverstock, who has no desire to be loved by his subordinates. It is all par for the course for Detective Inspector Bill Slider as he faces a case that takes him through Hammersmith and Notting Hill.

This investigation begins as a supposed crime passionelle, but each new kernel of evidence reveals an increasingly complex web of criminal intrigue. Slider is called on when a teenager finds a human finger among the fried potatoes at a London fish-and-chip shop. Body parts continue to surface as events expand to include a sinister tycoon, a prostitutes, rooming house, three mysterious men and five murders...

Praise for the Bill Slider series

"Harrod-Eagles and her detective hero form a class act. The style is fast, funny and furious, the plotting crisply devious, and the denouement perversely wayward. And even then, the final line in the novel contains an extra little gasp-inducing twist. Lovely stuff." Irish Times

"A witty, intricate puzzle." Publishers Weekly

"Being able to write with pacy humour is rare. Constructing good thrillers with realistic characters is also rare. Being able to combine the two, and to do it successfully, is nearly unique." David Tumelty

I always enjoy a visit with Bill Slider and his sidekick Atherton. And of course I love the puns! This is a series that is not heavy on philosophy, tragedy or trauma. It's an interesting (if gruesome) murder plot (with perhaps a few unanswered questions), and of course offers a saga of the travails of marriage, divorce, loving and leaving. Poor Bill -- he certainly has his problems, and how he works them out is ironic, sad and endearing. The narrative is light, never bogged down, and you always know he will discover the murderer.

Necrochip A Bill Slider Mystery edition by Cynthia HarrodEagles Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I read this as part of the first Bill Slider omnibus - so that I had already read the first two books in the series and was familiar with the Bill Slider character. I am enjoying the series so far (and am a huge fan of the author's Morland Dynasty series), even though I'm not usually all that into detective novels. I like the characters, the bits of humor, the building of the case and the twists and turns - and this novel had plenty of them. I also had been enjoying Bill's personal relationship problems, although I'm a bit cheesed off at the ending in this book. Bill is torn between his wife and his girlfriend - he's not normally the type to have a wife AND a girlfriend - so he deserves to be torn (preferably in many small pieces) - but now it looks like he's going to get an easy way out and it bugs me. In this installment of the series, his behavior is so lame and shameful that he honestly deserves to be abandoned by both women, and worse, it's a lost opportunity for the author, taking the easy way out. I know too well by now that Ms Harrod-Eagles could do better. But, still, truth is, I'm going to order the next Bill Slider omnibus. Maybe I'll be proved wrong and what SEEMS at the end of the book to indicate one path, might turn out to go in another direction.
Solid narration by Terry Wale. He gives a good performance, especially with regard to voicing the opposite sex.

The US title of this book is Death to Go.

A body is found in plastic bin bags behind Dave's Fish and Chips. It's discovered because a school girl's 20p of chips also included a deep fried finger. Ron Savage who ran Dave's insisted that he had the only key to the place and the back door had been bolted from the inside. It seems like an open and shut case.

Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Bill Slider has a new boss-- Mad Ivan Barrington, a spit and polish policeman who replaced the late and untidy Dickson, and who finds Slider unacceptable.

Add to this the fact that Slider's violinist lover wants him to confess their relation to Slider's wife. Slider, as usual, finds that every time he screws his courage to the sticking point something happens that gives him an excuse to postpone the scene.

Wonderfully complex plot that twists and turns back on itself with each new revelation. Solid British Police Procedural with good balance of personal angst and criminal detection.
A severed finger in a portion of chips is the gruesome start to this compelling crime novel. The rest of the body is discovered in black plastic sacks outside the back of the shop and naturally the owner, with the only key to the premises, is the prime suspect. But there will be other deaths before the complex web of crime is uncovered and the final story told. DI Bill Slider, in charge of the investigation, is facing problems of his own with lover Joanna giving him an ultimatum and Bill himself struggling with the decision about leaving his wife.

I found this book compelling reading with its interesting characters, complex plot and truly awful puns which add touches of macabre humour to the whole thing. I thought the way the interaction between the police characters was very well done with the uneasy assimilation of their new boss – DS Barrington – into the squad. New brooms may sweep clean but they are apt to discard things which are better kept.

If you like your crime novels with plenty of humour and well-drawn characters then this series may be for you. The books can be read in any order but it is easier to follow the characters’ private lives if they are read in the order in which they are published – this is number three is the series.
The sense of humor prevailing in Slider's adventures is a balm too seldom tapped by other practicioners. A redeeming smile always hovers nearby.
I love this series of mysteries. Great and absorbing on an icy winter day when One couldn't venture out!
The mistakes are so distracting. If anyone at wants to check it out, I bookmarked a large number of obvious mistakes.
I don't know how these books are being translated to but I do know they are not being translating well.
Cynthia Harrod-Eagles is one of those English authors whose writing craft has been perfected. Great stories with wonderful characters on both sides of the law. Bill Slider and his crew are so human and easily related to. Written with a wicked sense of humor too which comes across and yet she keeps the tension building. The writing is tight and the plots move along. Am reading the entire series and loving them all.
