A Guide to Stoicism St George William Joseph Stock 9781544791777 Books
I came upon this little book, or rather a pamphlet, after a desire to learn about Stoicism. In this work, Saint George William Joseph Stock (quite a mouthful, eh?) renders a sort of a primer on the philosophy of Stoicism by discussing the basic philosophy among the Greeks and Romans, and the forthcoming three divisions of Stoicism: logic, ethic, and physic. He briefly referenced to Socrates, Plato, Zeno, Diogenes of Babylon, as well as Seneca. This little book seemed to have served its chaste purpose by explaining what Stoicism is, as a basis of philosophy. On the other hand, I felt put off by the author's view on the topic rather than the subject itself. He didn't go into a full extensive discussion about this philosophy and there were no sources to back up his thesis.
Personally, I think it's one of the basic books on the subject, but not a full introduction to Stoicism. It can be useful, nevertheless.

A Guide to Stoicism St George William Joseph Stock 9781544791777 Books Reviews
As a person new to stoicism. This book gave me a thorough look on the history and people involve with the stoic school of thought.
I found this book to be packed full of information about Stoicism that I haven't found anywhere else. Definitely would recommend and it's free
St. George Stock's "Guide to Stoicism" is a great read about how stoicism played a part in the formation of Christianity. I am glad I purchased this book and I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you for reading my review.
Just finished my first course in Greek philosophy and wanted to learn more. This book was an excellent start because it "compares and contrasts" everyone from Plato and Socrates up into Roman times.
I have read a fair amount of Stoic literature, and I have to say this book didn't increase my understanding of Stoicism. The author wrote in a very dense way that was difficult to understand.
Very, very complete guide to the Stoic mentality and history. Has many references to famous Stoics and, perhaps more importantly, Stoic detractors. This book is a difficult slog for those who seek a simple introduction to Stoicism, but could prove a rich store of information and anectdotes for a more seasoned reader.
This is a nice and short basic introduction to stoicism. I actually recommend reading this before you start with Seneca and Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. It helps to know the background and the "why"; especially when reading books by great leaders who wrote them about 2000 years ago!
After this you can read "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius -- also for free on Classics, or "the stoics bible".
